Believe it or not, the room you record in makes a huge difference in the outcome of your recording. Hard floors and walls can make for a natural echo that is permanent in your recording, Here are some things we do, you can do what you can to try to emulate it.
Demon Digital Studio has the following attributes:
-
Pad and thick carpet on the floor in both rooms - Helps with sound proofing, deadening, and drum set creeping across the floor.
-
Vortex spray in bedliner(yes, truck bedliner) on all walls and ceiling over the drywall - This creates a hard low end blocking system. YOu can also use epoxy purchased from an auto parts store but it will not last as long.
-
2x6 walls rather than 2x4, two of them, yep double walls with air in between. - Helps keep sound in the rooms.
-
4 inch soundproffing foam on all walls and ceilings - Deadens the room and helps soundproof it so the wife doesn't get upset at 2am :-)
-
Musicians room and engineers room. - This is essential if you are recording other musicians, especially drum sets. Why? Because if you do not isolate yourself (engineer) from the source (drum set) you will have one hell of a time EQing and setting levels because you will be hearing too much of the acoustic drum set and not just the speakers from the pc that you want to hear. Yes we have the stereotypical big piece of glass between the two rooms, just like you saw on the movie "Rock Star".
-
Ventilation - It seems with the Vortex and foam, I have created a semi air tight room, enough to get very hot and choke you. You need an air intake and an exhaust fan in the ceiling, especially if someone is a smoker.
-
Don't smoke in the engineer room, the computer will choke sooner than it should. Not to mention all the other equipment that collects tar and crap. If the band wants to smoke in the musicians room, then fine, it's their stuff not yours.
That's about the gist of what we have going over here, I will post more as questions are asked.
