You do not need to buy the $1000.00 mics to get great recordings. I have been using the same range of mics all my life and I can't complain. Here is a list of microphones we use at the studio as well as out live at the clubs.
Shure:
SM57 - All drums accept kick - these mics are unidirectional which means they try to only pick up what is directly in front of them
SM58 - Guitars - these are about the same as a 57 only omnidirectional.
Beta58 - Vocals - Slightly better dynamics than the SM58, they are best used for vocals.
Audio Technica:
ATM63 Unidirectional - Same purposes as the SM57
Peavey:
pvr1 omnidirectional condenser mic - Used for Cymbals and Hi Hat on drum sets.
Sennheiser:
E902 kick drum mic - Produces frequencies well above and below that of the other mics listed here
As long as you don't get your mic from best buy or radio shack, it should be fine for home recording.
Hint: If your mic has the cord permanently attached, throw it out and get one of the mentioned above.
